The donation of a Echocardiogram Machine to the new Cardiology Unit, at the Cornwall Regional Hospital by the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education Fund (CHASE), was described as an early Christmas gift by Dr. Claudine Lewis, Cardiologist at the Hospital.
The equipment, valued at $10 million, was officially handed over by Mr. W. Billy Heaven, Chief Executive Officer of CHASE at the opening of the Unit on Tuesday, November 24 in Montego Bay, St. James.
An emotional Dr. Lewis, described the equipment as a gift that will keep on giving and a major boost for the hospital to enhance specialised and professional and modern health care delivery, particularly for patients with heart and related illnesses. "The equipment will fill a big void for the Western Region and is part of our vision for the next five years to offer advanced coronary care," said Dr. Lewis.
CHASE's CEO reported that Cornwall Regional was one of the 662 projects supported by the Fund under its health sector with the Hospital so far receiving $32.3 million to purchase vital equipment. Among them were: A C-arm Fluoroscopy Unit; Orthopedic Surgical Equipment and Diathermy Machines.
Mr. Heaven appealed to the Hospital to ensure that highly trained personnel were put in place to operate the state-of-the-art equipment that the institution has been receiving to ensure the delivery of high quality health care.
To date CHASE has provided $1.04 billion to the health sector, with $526 million granted to health institutions for equipment; to build clinics and health centres and laboratories and infirmaries. Beneficiaries of the Fund also include the Heart Foundation of Jamaica, the Kidney Support Foundation and the Ministry of Health.
The CHASE Fund was established in 2002 after a Cabinet decision was made to amend the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Act to facilitate monetary contributions which would be deposited by the Lottery operations for the benefit of Sports Development, Early Childhood Education, Health as well as an added sector to cover Arts and Culture. |
